Australia: Out in 67th Place
Friday, January 18, 2008 I reraised all-in on the second hand today with 75s, got called by AQ, and flopped the nuts. That got me started, and I had it all the way up to 260k at one point. Alas, once we hit the money I went 0-for-3 in showdowns. Granted, I had the worst hand every time, but I was about a 3-2 favorite to win at least one of them. Had I won any of the three, I would've been in pretty good shape once again. Oh well, that's how it goes. I was pretty lucky to cash at all given where I started the day. Overall, this was a pretty fun trip for me, and the poker even was somewhat exciting. That said, I probably won't play any other main events until Foxwoods, unless I try to win some other seat somewhere. Good luck to my friends Peter Feldman and Kenny Shei, both still in the tournament at the time of my bustout. Australia Day Two Thursday, January 17, 2008 The chip count today went something like this: 53k, 80k, 112k, 90k, 179k, 154k, 124k, 157k, 70k, 59k. And I'm at 59k now. The big dropoff was when I took a set against a flush draw and lost a 166k pot. If I win that one I have 230-240k and I'm in great shape. Instead I've got 20 blinds and have to hope a few things break my way. Frustrating for sure, but I'm going to give it my best shot. There are 97 players left and 80 get paid. If I'm still short when it gets down to 84 or 85, surviving to the money will become a legitimate consideration. But for now, I'm going to play my usual 20-blind game. I'm too tired for hands tonight, but here are the results from yesterday. 1) Me: AA, Opp: Ac6c (flush) 2) Me: 4d3d, Opp: AcQc (flush draw, he didn't get there) 3) Me: QQ, Opp: bluff (he didn't show) Australia Day One Wednesday, January 16, 2008 We started with 20k in chips. My chip count went something like this: 20k, 9k, 20k, 35k, 18k, 35k, 53k, 37k, 32k, 37k, 55k. And I end Day One with 53,500, about 10-20 percent bigger than an average stack. I'll do three key hands. 50-100 blinds, I open for 250 in EP. I get called by a player in LP, and by one of the blinds. Flop comes Q84 with two clubs. I check, LP bets 400, the blind calls, I make it 1800. LP calls, the blind folds. Turn, Jc. Check-check. River pairs the eight. I bet 3,200. LP calls. What are the hands? 150-300 blinds, 25 ante. With six players left to act, I open for 850. A loose player two to my left calls, the rest fold. Flop 844 with two clubs. I bet 1500. Opp makes it 3,000. I call. Turn is an offsuit ace. I check. Opp bets 4500. I make it 12,500. Opp moves me in for 10,100 additional. I call. What are the hands? 300-600 blinds, 75 ante. Tight/straightforward player who just won a big pot with AA and is still stacking chips, opens for 2,500 with five players left to act. I call in the SB. Loose/aggressive player calls in the big blind. Flop KJ7 rainbow. Checked around. Turn is a low card, making a two-flush. I check, BB bets 4,000, EP folds, I call. River is a blank. I check. BB bets 8,000. I call. What are the hands? Good luck with these. As always, emails are accepted. Time for me to rest. Australia Tuesday, January 15, 2008 I know I haven't been around much, but I won a seat to the Aussie Millions last month, and now I'm here in Melbourne ready to start my Day One in a few hours. I'll post updates when I can. You can also check in with pokernews.com for info. Wish me luck!
