Results from the Foxwoods Hand
Thursday, December 21, 2006 I got a surprisingly high number of response to my hand range question. I guess it's good to know that I can take off for a few months and maintain a readership when I get back. Anyway, I got a wide variety of answers. Some people gave the big blind a much tighter range than I did, others gave him a much looser range than I did. The range I assign is something like QJ, QT, A9, K9s, Q9s, J9, T9, JT, KJ, KTs, 98, TT, AJs, ATs. I thought middle pair was more likely than top pair, and I thought certain hands like K9o or Q9o were unlikely to be in his range based on preflop action. I had AK, and I have about 35% equity against the above range, making it a call, but very close. During the event itself, I actually had a slightly looser range in mind for him, ruling out more offsuit hands based on the preflop action, and including a few more pure bluffs. When I ran the pokerstove six weeks ago, I gave myself about 40% equity against his range, making it a much clearer call. In this later analysis, however, I'm trying to be a little more conservative, and a little more open to the idea that he would've called very loose preflop. Bearing that in mind, I still think it's a call, but it's close. Highlight from a NL cash game yesterday: I fired the third barrel on the river and the guy thought for a while and then folded. I don't fire three barrels all that often, but it's especially fun when it works. I probably won't update again before Christmas. But Happy Holidays all, and I'll be catching up next week. An Update on Sunday, Like Every Other Sunday Monday, December 18, 2006 Here's my Sunday update, because everyone knows I update this journal every Sunday. What's that? I haven't updated in six Sundays? Well, there must be some explanation. Actually, there's isn't a good explanation, but there is an explanation. And since the question I've gotten most over the last few weeks has been "why don't you update your blog?"; I'll try to provide that explanation here. I haven't updated in a long time for the following reasons, roughly ordered from biggest to smallest contributing factor. 1) I am lazy. 2) I've been doing a lot of non-poker stuff lately. In November, I successfully finished nanowrimo, for one. In addition, I've been studying with some mathematical types that I might've potentially ended up working for--that is, I've been doing some math that could've landed me a job outside of the poker world. 3) I don't make any money from this blog, I only do it for fun. I felt the material recently had been getting stale, and I didn't think it would improve if I wrote in my journal just because I thought I had to. So what resulted was a break. The good news, if you're among those who want to see me keep playing poker, is that I'm not taking a job outside the poker world--at least not yet. And as of a few days ago I've gone back to being nothing but a poker player and a writer. With this in mind, I should now be returning to semi-regular updates of this journal. I've been playing No Limit Hold 'Em cash games, and surprisingly enough, I'm actually enjoying them. If you've been saying hello from the rail, just know that I rarely chat much while I'm playing and sometimes I even turn off observer chat. The only major brick-and-mortar tournament I've attended since my last update was the World Poker Finals. I played two events and didn't cash in either, although I won my seat into the main event through a super satellite, so all was not lost. The most interesting hand of my trip came in the $3,000 No Limit Hold 'Em event. It was a while ago at this point, so I may not get the details exactly right, but it went something like this: There were about 45 players left and 30 would cash. With blinds of 1,000-2,000 and a 300 ante, I had a stack size of about 70% average with 47,000. I opened in early position for 5500 and only the big blind called. The big blind was a strong player who has been very successful on the internet especially, and he had a ton of chips. There was about 15,000 in the pot. The flop came Q94 rainbow and the bb checked. I bet 9,000. He moved me in for about 33,000 more. I was getting almost exactly 2-1 on my money (that much I remember), and I needed to assign him a range. So I'll ask anyone who has read this far--what range of hands do you give the strong player on the big blind at this point? You can email your answers to jacksup@mattmatros.com. I haven't said what I had, because I don't want that to influence the completely independent question of what my opponent's range was. I'll give the results later in the week, regardless of what kind of response I get. I figure after ignoring my readership for almost two months, I can't ask you to return a quiz right off the bat. Best of luck to anyone out there playing poker.
