What's happened?
Thursday, October 26, 2006 Some things that have happened recently... 1) I won the main event at FARGO. Yeah! 2) Carlos Beltran took a called third strike. Boo! 3) I've started playing online cash games regularly again. Yeah! 4) I've been winning so far. Bo... Oh wait, I mean, Yeah! 5) I caught a foul ball from the Mezzanine during Game Six. Yeah! My next big tournament is the World Poker Finals. I'm going up the day after the elections, and I'll be playing the last three events. I think I'm due for a score in one of these things. I know I've been short on poker content (or content of any kind, for that matter), but I'd like to thank everyone who submitted article ideas for me for future CardPlayer columns. I've already used one I got from "sryIdntrembr." I took his suggestion to write an article about betting at side pots, and the result will soon appear in the magazine. The next one I'm writing will be about results-oriented thinking. I'm actually looking forward to doing that one. For now there's still no poker content here, but since I'm back to playing hands again, I promise I'll find something interesting for all my readers at some point over the next few days. Best of luck to everyone playing online poker in the post-SAFE PORT ACT era. Legislation and Other Topics Sunday, October 08, 2006 If you're reading this journal, then unless you've been hiding under a rock, you're aware that the U.S. Congress passed a bill intending to "crack down" on online gambling. On many, many other poker sites and forums, you can read opinions about what effect this legislation will have on players, what it means for poker in general, and what the sites themselves are doing in response. Everyone probably knows by now that PartyPoker is closing its doors to U.S. customers once Our Fearless Leader signs the bill into law. I'd rather not spend time discussing all those aspects of this news. I'll just say that, for me, it's not going to matter all that much. There will still be places to play in the short-term, and I've never viewed online poker as my long-term career anyway. If online poker dies in the next year, I will have no trouble finding other things to do with my time. Congratulations to Jordan Morgan, who finished second in the U.S. Poker Championships. Nice job as well by Shane Schleger, who reached the final table. The last weekend of the WCOOP typified the way most of my tournaments have gone this year. I made a run and got some chips in the main event, only to run QQ into KK for a big pot, and then to move in with ten big blinds and lose a showdown. But further congrats are in order for Lefort, who made the final table. Lefort is "another Matros protege", in the words of Peter "Nordberg" Feldman, and his success is well-deserved. I took today off from the tournaments to spend some time with my family. FARGO is coming up this weekend, as is the NLCS, so I'm pretty sure to miss next Sunday's tournaments as well. Let's go Mets! Finally, having written 32 columns for CardPlayer over the last year and change, I'm running out of ideas. Anyone have a topic they'd like to see addressed? Bear in mind that I can't repeat something I've already done. You can see my archived articles here. Send your ideas to jacksup@mattmatros.com. Best of luck to everyone playing poker this week.
