Borgata - Out on Day Two
Monday, January 30, 2006

Here were some of the big hands:

Blinds 600-1200/200. J.J. Liu moves all-in from the cutoff+2 for 17,900. I move-in for 50k or so from the cutoff with 99. The rest fold. She has KQo, and I lose.

Blinds 800-1600/200. UTG limps (he's been doing that a lot). Mike May limps behind him in mid-position. The small blind limps, I check in the big blind with JTo. Flop comes AK4 with two clubs. Checked around. Turn is a blank. Small blind leads for 3,000. I make it 9,500. UTG folds, Mike folds. SB moves me in for 24k more. I fold.

Blinds 800-1600/200. John D'Agostino raises in the cutoff to 4,800. I call in the big blind with J8o. Flop comes AAJ. I check. John bets 7,000. I move-in for about 18k total. John mucks instantly.

Very next hand. A good player (his name is Nick, and he's someone who has become a new friend of mine over the past few days) opens for 5000 in the cutoff+2. I call from the small blind with 66. Big blind folds. Flop comes T75 rainbow. I check. Nick bets 8000. I move-in for 31000. Nick thinks for a while and finally calls with 88. I don't improve, and IGHN.

I never really got a nice run going in this tournament. My high water mark was 60k, which isn't bad. But I never got the push to get to the next level.

Next big tournament: Good question. Harrah's AC is about a 15% shot, and the L.A. Poker Classic is about an 80% shot.

Borgata Day One
Monday, January 30, 2006

I didn't get many hands. I did play a few interesting ones. I did manage to get my starting 25,000 up to 57,700, which is about average with 168 (or so) players left (381 started). I honestly can't believe I have that many chips, although a lot of good players have a lot more chips than I do.

Will update tomorrow.

Quick Borgata Update
Sunday, January 29, 2006

I got in on Friday night, as it turned out I was still too stick to get up Friday morning and play. I feel much better now, thanks. I spent today (Saturday) playing a one-table, where I finished fourth for no money, and a super, where I won my seat. Thank God I won it too, as the sucker didn't end until 2 a.m. and I'm only just now going to sleep (it's 3:45). Tournament starts in seven hours and fifteen minutes. Yikes. Good night.

Postponed
Friday, January 27, 2006

I was supposed to go to the Borgata on Wednesday for the $1500 No Limit Hold 'Em event, but I fell deathly ill on Tuesday and never made it down there. I'm finally feeling better--I'm about 85 percent right now. Assuming I don't take a turn for the worse overnight, I'm going to drive down in the morning to play the $2500 No Limit Hold 'Em event tomorrow. I HOPE the next update will be from the Borgata.

Meanwhile, I've qualified for Full Tilt's Iron Man Challenge. I got the required points on one occasion by playing just one hand. Behold, the entirety of a heads-up match:

Finally, I owe congrats to the following friends:
Chris Fargis, for winning the 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball event in Tunica
Gavin Smith, for making his third WPT final table
Steve Benton, for winning the $500 Limit Hold 'Em event at Borgata
and Robert Hwang, for making his third Borgata final table in his last three attempts

Nice job all!

More Tournaments Every Sunday
Monday, January 23, 2006

My poker Sunday was about as eventful as the football games. I did make a run at Dise (where else?), but it petered out before we got to the real money.

Sunday results follow.

PokerRoom: 232nd of 269, -$320
InterPoker Half Million Guarantee: 726th of 869, -$530
Regular InterPoker: 92nd of 325, -$211.95
PartyPoker: 2865th of 3375, -$215
PokerStars: 1791st of 4074, -$215
Paradise: 31st of 723, +$279.45
Sunday Total: -$1,212.50
2006 Online Tournament Total: 24 events, +24.45 buy-ins, +$11,174.10

Party resolved the tournament from Saturday. I got a reasonably close estimate to what my chips were worth, but it was still annoying to have the tournament crash. The Party Million Guarantee is one of the better online tournaments every month, and I often miss it. I was psyched to be playing it, and have chips in it, for the first time in a while. But such are the vagaries of online poker, and especially PartyPoker.

I leave for the Borgata on Wednesday for the Borgata Winter Open. Next post will be from Atlantic City.

What a Day I Picked to Order the NCAA Hoops Package
Saturday, January 21, 2006

The poker was kind of boring today. I tried that WPT Championship satellite on PokerRoom for the first time, and didn't do anything. Also I lost a heads-up match on Full Tilt for the first time after eight consecutive victories (I've found that an easy way to do their Iron Man Challenge is to just play a $500 heads-up Sit-and-Go every day). I'm writing now as the Party Million Dollar Guarantee tournament has been stalled for three hours. I'm assuming it will be cancelled, but who the hell knows.

Thank God the basketball has been fantastic! Four amazing games I got to (mostly) witness! First, my St. John's Red Storm over Pittsburgh. Then Kentucky comes back to beat the Gamecocks. Then Georgetown over Duke! Then West Virginia (my adopted team since SJU has been so bad for so long) over UCLA. Each game had a big lead followed by a huge comeback. Only one comeback (Kentucky) proved successful. Even Syracuse made a run at Villanova to get back into the game, but Villanova responded with a run of its own and the game wasn't interesting by the end.

Typical Sunday schedule tomorrow. The oddity is the Interpoker 500k Guarantee at 2 p.m. I see tomorrow as a win-win. Either I make a score, or I bust from everything and relax watching football.

Sunday Report
Monday, January 16, 2006

I got some chips in the Paradise Masters tournament early on when I ran AK through AA. I got some more chips later when I ran JT through KK. But then I ran into aces twice more--each time I had an ace in my hand, and each time I failed to suck out. Then, with fifteen players left, this hand happened:

I don't want to think about how much equity that eight on the turn cost me. I would've been the chip leader if I'd won this pot. Instead I became the shortest stack at the table. Such are Dise structures.

Down to five big blinds, I moved in with 9h2h and ran into AhKh. I spiked a deuce on the river to double up. Then, with eleven players left, the cutoff opened for 50k and I moved in for 240k on the button with As7s. I ran into aces one final time (for those that are counting, that's four times I had an ace in my hand in this tournament and STILL managed to run into aces) and missed the Costa Rica trip by one spot. Oh well, I didn't actually want to fly to Costa Rica anyway as I'm doing a whole lot of travelling as it is these next few months--so in my mind an 11th place finish was probably better than 10th or 9th. And I bet the ten guys who made it are thrilled, so good for them. I would've liked to have that AK hold up though, because I could've definitely used a couple hundred thousand dollars.

Sunday results here.

PokerRoom: 45th of 301, -$320
InterPoker: 352nd of 381, -$212.59
UltimateBet: 2230th of 2774, -$530

Sunday Total: +$8,896.41
2006 Online Tournament Total: 16 events, +28.45 buy-ins, +$12,656.15

Oh, and here's a blast from the past--I played my first $30-$60 Party hands in a long time this week. I didn't play many, but what the hell, let's do a bet update! Total this week: +$945. Overall total, +$52,475.

I'm running a private tournament in Florida this week. I'll update again after that's done (probably on Thursday). Good luck playing your hands until then.

Enter the Weekend
Friday, January 13, 2006

There are some great tournaments tomorrow (Saturday) all day long. Unfortunately I'm unable to play them. Fortunately, there are even better tournaments all day long on Sunday. Here's my Sunday schedule this week:

1:00 Paradise Masters, $1,000 NLHE
2:00 PokerRoom, $300 NLHE
3:00 InterPoker, $200 NLHE
3:30 UltimateBet, $500 NLHE
4:30 PokerStars, $200 NLHE
5:00 Paradise, $200 NLHE

And if I whiff those, I reserve the right to play more later on in the day. A lot of chances for a score--here's hoping I hit one.

I've added comments to the soccer blog now, so feel free to chime in over there.

One quick thing I wanted to mention about the Bahamas tournament: there were lots and lots of players aged 18-21 in the final five tables down there (which was legal for this event). I don't think that was a coincidence. My guess is that a lot of these young players never learned how to play the "wrong" way, and some of them have figured out lots of creative ways to accumulate chips in NLHE tournaments. I predict that within eight years, Phil Hellmuth will no longer be the youngest WSOP Main Event winner. Anyone want to bet me?

Good luck to all my readers playing their own poker this weekend.

PCA Day Three
Sunday, January 08, 2006

I got my chips up to 290k. Then I opened UTG for 17,000 with AK. A tough younger player nicknamed Ozzie called me in the small blind. The flop came AK7, all clubs. Ozzie checked, I bet 42k. Ozzie made it 150k. I moved all-in for 121k more, Ozzie called with 77. Turn club. River not a club, not an ace, not a king. I'm out in 22nd place.

Next big tournament: Borgata Winter Open, end of January (lots of big internet tournaments before then)

PCA Day Two
Sunday, January 08, 2006

66 players left. Par is about T110,000. I'm at T144,500.

One quick hand:
Blinds 400-800/100. Folded to me on SB, I make it 2500 with Ad9s. BB calls. Flop AhJs5s. I bet 4000, BB calls. Turn 8c. I check. BB bets 10,000. I move in for 38,000. BB calls with As3s. River is a blank and I win.

Going to sleep now, will post again tomorrow.

PCA Day One
Thursday, January 05, 2006

Apparently the best run of cards I will ever get occurred in the first four levels of the 2006 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. In that time, I had the following hole cards with the following boards:

66, 86596
77, 872
22, 929
QQ, QJ7
AA, AQ8
TT, TT8
88, 833

Not only that, I had AK four times and won the pot with a preflop reraise EVERY single time. I had T32,700 at the dinner break.

I got it up to T40,000 after dinner with steals, and by winning a coin flip against a short stack. But then I opened for T1,200 with 88 and the player to my immediate left made it T4,000, leaving himself T6,000 behind. He was one of the actual players at the table, and not a weak-tightie. For a couple of reasons, my read was that he did not have QQ-AA. I gave him something like 77-JJ, AQ, AK. So I called, and I set him in on the 652 flop. He called instantly with JJ and, despite hitting a seven on the turn, I didn't improve. I end Day One With T30,700. Par is about T22,000, so I'm definitely satisfied, but man a T40,000 stack would feel pretty sweet right now (let alone a T50,000 stack). I guess if I'm ever going to have one of these home run Day Ones, I'm going to have to go on my rush late in the day.

Time to go to sleep. Day Two is Saturday (Day 1B) is tomorrow. I'll try to update again Saturday night.

Happy New Year
Monday, January 02, 2006

Welcome to 2006, readers! I hope everyone had a festive time on Saturday, and a relaxing Sunday watching the Skins nearly blow their playoff spot.

There is a lot going on in the upcoming poker year, and I have an excitement about my profession that I haven't had in a while. That's gotta be a good thing--let's see if it lasts until the World Series, eh?

I want to be much more organized and productive this year. I mention my New Year's Poker Resolutions in an upcoming CardPlayer article, so I don't want to say too much about them here. But one goal is to play a lot more tournaments, both online and in real life. There are so many great opportunities for the online tournament player these days. Check out the typical weekend schedule:

Saturday
1 p.m. PartyPoker $300 NLHE
3 p.m. Full Tilt $200 NLHE Super Satellite
6 p.m. PokerRoom $600 WPT Championship Super Satellite
10 p.m. Party $200 NLHE

Sunday
2 p.m. PokerRoom $300 NLHE
2 p.m. Bodog $100 NLHE
3 p.m. Interpoker $200 NLHE
4:30 p.m. Party $200 NLHE
4:30 p.m. PokerStars $200 NLHE
5 p.m. Paradise $200 NLHE
6 p.m. Full Tilt $200 NLHE
7 p.m. Stars $100 rebuy NLHE
9 p.m. UltimateBet $200 NLHE
9:30 FullTilt $200 HORSE

Damn. And I didn't even list all of them. I'm going to try to play as many of these as I can every weekend, but I reserve the right to back out of anything that starts after 7 p.m. on Sunday if I'm deep in one of the biggies. I want to play 500 or more online tournaments with buyins of $200 or more in 2006. Yum yum.

The quest began today. Since I have a bunch of other stuff to write about, I'm not going to include details, just results. To be honest, there weren't too many interesting hands anyway.

PokerRoom: 105th of 263, -$320
Bodog: 10th of 825, +$891
Inter: 298th of 337, -$208.76
Party: 484th of 2987, -$215
Stars: 18th of 3725, +$4,627.50
Dise: 744th of 816, -$200
2006 Online Tournament Total: 6 events, +25.7 buy-ins, +$4,574.74

I will keep my readers informed of this number throughout the year, just for fun. (I guess it will be especially fun if I end up stuck $100,000.) Also, I'll be updating this journal at least twice a week this year, and you can expect to see a complete redesign of mattmatros.com in the near future.

In other news, some of you may have noticed that I've started my American soccer blog. Comments will be enabled there soon, and if I like the way that works, I will add comments to this journal (a feature a lot of my readers have asked for).

Finally, it's high time I gave the results of that heads-up quiz from the $11 rebuy tournament I won a few weeks ago. Let me start my saying I got a great response from a guy called JBalls99. I include some of his answers in these results.

What should JMS call with? What should he raise with? What's my range?

JBalls99: "JMS's turn bet looks weak. I think you are using your position to try and take this pot down. Your range is fairly large in this spot. I believe you just called on the flop to try and take the pot away from him on the turn. I more likely put you on a bluff than a real hand, although if you hit the Ace or a flush draw you would probably raise here as well."

My hand was: Jd Qd
My opponent: folded--but he maybe should call down with just a five

What should JMS call with? What's my range?

JBalls99: "Your range is anything from a pair and a flush draw to a flush draw. After consecutive check-raises, the second one basically putting your opponent all in I really think you have to be strong. I would say hands like QcJc, AcJx, QcJx are pretty likely."

I pretty much agree with that, although I happened to be on the weak end of my range here.

My hand was: Th Ac
My opponent: folded--and he should probably fold fairly often here, possibly needing a good king to play

What should JMS call with? What should he raise with? What's my range?

It feels to me as if JMS would need a decent king to call here, given that 9T came in on the river. I could certainly be firing the third shell with nothing, but a lot of my plausible hands beat him.

My hand was: 7c Ts
My opponent: Called with 8h 9d. I don't hate this call, but I do think folding could've been justified.

*** RIVER *** [4c 8s Qs 6h] [Jh]
JMSiwik: bets 160000
jacksup: raises 842000 to 1002000

What should JMS call with? What should he raise with? What's my range?

JBalls99: "Even though I put you on a good hand, your raise on the river could be with a wide range of hands since JMS looks weak, you can try to get him off his hand. He should call with any Queen or better, if you bluffed him off this hand it's his own fault for playing it weak. He should raise with 57 or any set and that's about it. If he is the one with QJ you can argue for a raise as well."

I could be huge here, or I could have nothing. My opponent sort of backed me into that spot. I think he should probably call down with a jack or better.

I think I should call with two pair or better, and muck any one pair hand. I should probably only raise for value with KJ. It really looks like my opponent is value betting here.

JBalls99: "You should be folding most hands here. I believe he truly is strong most likely AK, AQ or KJ even AA."

Me too--I think I need a good king to play.

My hand was: 6s 3s
I: take a guess :)

What should I call with?

JBalls99: "His overbet all-in looks most like a busted flush draw. I've seen this play before from the nuts, but even more from the missed flushed draw."

I'll add that this particular player had not made an overbet with a good hand throughout the entire match. He milked them, milked them, milked them. Furthermore, there were very few hands I could give him that he would want to value bet on the river, period, so I felt confident he had a busted draw (although I took my sweet time bank).

My hand was: Qc 6s
I: called
My opponent had: 7s 9c. Match over.

Congrats to any of you who read this far. My next post to this journal will be later in the week, from the Bahamas. I'll have a new Soccer Blog post up tomorrow.

Everybody have a great poker year!
